In this custom coin insight at SPARTANcoins.com I want to speak about shiny metal finishes.

Shiny metal finishes such as shiny gold, nickel and black nickel consist of shiny raised and shiny recessed areas. There is little to no natural contrast between the two like there is on antique coins. This could potentially create legibility issues when looking at the coin directly from the front. If you have produced your own shiny custom coins before then you know what I’m speaking of.

I don’t say this to scare anyone away from our shiny metal finish choices. I say these things because I want you to know what you’re purchasing. There are two things that can be done to increase the contrast of shiny metal finishes.

The first thing that could be done is to add color. Adding color to the recessed area which will cover the recessed shiny area and create a more desirable contrast for the raised shiny area. The second thing that could be done is to add a texture to the recessed shiny background through the use of sandblasting. Some of you may know this as a frosted look and have probably seen it before on .999 fine silver collectible coins.

One more thing I would like to note here is about shiny silver. I don’t offer shiny silver as a metal finish on this or any of my websites. Even if you see if offered at the time of this writing I can assure you I NO longer offer it. My reasoning is because I have noticed over time that some shiny silver coins tarnish. The reason is because of the presence of fine silver in the plating bath. I don’t know about you but I personally don’t have the desire to see my custom coin investment tarnish. I have also seen extreme cases where the shiny silver metal finish also made the epoxy over it turn yellow over time. That’s why you will NOT see it offered on this website. If you absolutely must have shiny silver then I recommend using Nickel. I seriously doubt that anyone would be able to see a difference between nickel plating and shiny silver plating.
