Are you being misled or lied to?

On Friday July 22, 2016 I had a meeting with a client about duplicating a coin. That meeting led me to discover some new questions I might pose to potential clients. As I researched to find this client’s previous supplier, I ended up getting another lesson in the fact that things are not always what they appear.

You see, I found the client’s coin on a competing website only to find out later that the coin was actually manufactured by a completely different competitor. There could be a very valid reason for this. Maybe they are innocently displaying coins they are capable of duplicating, or displaying coins with the same features as the coins pictured.

However, my first thought was uh oh, someone is displaying coins on a website that they did NOT create! I wonder, if any or how many others are doing this exact same thing?

Now I pose this question to you. Do you know for sure that your challenge coin maker of choice manufactured the coins displayed on their website or are you just assuming they did?

I don’t know if this matters to you but it does to me and here’s why. If they would mislead you about the coins they have produced then what else might they mislead you about? I have my own feelings regarding the borderline misleading advertising gimmicks used in this industry.

When you start (asking questions) picking scabs as Tool says (in Forty Six & 2 about 1:13 into the song below), you usually end up with more questions. If for example, your chosen vendor didn’t really manufacture all the coins shown on their website – do they have that information disclosed somewhere on their website? If your vendor doesn’t have any copies of your coin to take pictures of then maybe they never actually received your order. If they never received your order then how do they perform quality assurance checks?

Do you see where I’m going with this? Sometimes pulling one thread leads to a garment falling apart or in this case asking the right question may lead to making people uncomfortable.

I’m not here to say that any of my competition is acting unethically. I’m here to shed some light on a topic that I find potentially troubling. All of us assume way too much - about people, businesses and life in general. Perhaps it’s time we take a step back and really start asking the difficult questions.
